I create art with curiosity, confidence, and conviction. My brushwork techniques and influences are evident as you can recognize Impressionist traditions. Utilizing varied complementary colors and natural tones, color and line define the subject and space. My art is emotionally expressive with many deliberate brush strokes.
I paint watercolors by layering transparent colors on Arches watercolor paper.
I paint landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, portraits, and animals. My landscapes and seascapes include beaches, river valleys, mountain ridges, trees, clouds, and neighborhood streets. I appreciate the artwork of many artists such as Alice Schille, Beatrix Potter, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, and Maurice Prendergast.
My portrait of a local artist was selected for the 2025- 2026 Schaefer Portrait Challenge juried exhibition. My painting “Lahaina Harbor” won the first annual Lahaina Town Action Committee Poster Contest in 1989. Acceptance into many Art Maui juried exhibitions demonstrates my enduring artistic commitment. As a plein air painter I paint places in Maui’s bright morning light.
I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education from Massachusetts College of Art, a Master of Education degree from the University of Hawaii, and a Children’s Book Illustration Certificate from the University of California San Diego.
I have shared her enthusiasm for the arts by teaching children in the neighborhoods and schools. My educational pursuits led me to teach art and social studies to middle school students, using art making to promote learning,
I designed and painted a mural depicting kalo workers growing kalo on the inside walls of a historic school building with student and staff participation. I also painted murals of flowing rivers surrounding water fountains at the school. I have written grants for art exhibitions and outreach art education programs in Maui county for children with the Lahaina Arts Society. At Alu Like, Inc. I wrote a grant for Pualani Kanaka’ole Kanahele to research and record Maui chants for statewide library distribution. I also wrote a policies and procedural manual for the Maui County youth centers to use.
